Legislative Update from Rep. Randy Jessup

Friday, May 11, 2018

Greetings from the capitol!

This past week I was pleased to vote in favor of the Pensions legislation in our Government Operations committee.  This coming week, the bill will likely be voted upon by the full House and I expect passage for signature by the Governor.

The legislation includes a shared commitment by retirees, current employees and the state to stabilize the pension funds for fire fighters, state patrol officers, teachers and state employees.  The good news is that people are living healthier, longer lives and as a result this legislation is needed.  I have previously voiced my support for this effort as we need to honor our commitment to the dedicated employees serving our community and state.

On a local note, this past Monday the Turtle Lake Homeowners Association held their annual meeting.  Over the past year I have interacted with TJ Bates of DNR fisheries regarding the opportunity for harvesting large-mouth bass from the lake in the future.  TJ presented at the meeting that the DNR anticipates relaxing the current restriction from catch-and-release to catch-and-retain for fish less than 12 or 14 inches as a test in 2020.

The DNR will assess the current bass population next spring and gain public input in 2019 before proceeding.  Their current assessment suggests the existing strong bass population may be stunting fish growth which could be rectified by relaxing the catch-and-release restriction.

Further discussion at the meeting turned to the concern for invasive species, particularly zebra mussels.  Zebra mussels have infested White Bear Lake in addition to other lakes throughout the state.  Ramsey County, DNR and local lake homeowner associations have been working diligently on boat inspections, however, more may be needed to prevent zebra mussels spreading to our local lakes.  I would appreciate your input on this subject as no successful treatment solution has yet been established to contain this invasive species.
