SAINT PAUL, MN – On Thursday, the Minnesota House of Representatives will debate an omnibus bill, SF3656. Rep. Nick Zerwas, R-Elk River, will offer an amendment recognizing Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) as an “occupational disease” in Minnesota statute. This would allow firefighters, police officers, and paramedics diagnosed with PTSD the presumption that the diagnosis is a work-related illness.
“Our first responders like firefighters, police officers, state troopers, and EMTs, see things on a daily basis that would be appalling to the general public,” said Zerwas. “These interactions can certainly lead to PTSD, which is potentially debilitating for anyone. I look forward to offering this amendment to support our first responders, and the job they do to keep our communities safe despite the inherent dangers and risk.”
Twin Cities firefighters are expected to rally at the Capitol at 11AM, Thursday, May 3 in support of Rep. Zerwas’ amendment.
