Bipartisan Bills Passing the Legislature & Town Hall Next Week

Friday, April 20, 2018

Friends,

After a few false starts and one last blast from Winter, it looks like it may finally be Spring. I'm looking forward to getting outside and enjoying the beautiful Spring weather this weekend, and hope you are too!

Business Organization Bill Unanimously Passed Senate

This week, the Senate unanimously passed my bill, HF 2764, that will modernize our business organization laws, making them more in line with that of Delaware where many businesses are incorporated. Delaware is the national leader in business law and it will help to make Minnesota a more attractive place for companies to form and expand into.

My bill passed the House unanimously earlier this session and now the Senate. This is good, common sense legislation that, literally, everyone can get behind. I am proud to have carried it through the process and look forward to it becoming law. It now moves to Governor Dayton's desk for his signature.

Bills on House Floor Next Week

This upcoming week two of the bills I have worked to get passed this session will be hitting the House Floor. I look forward to presenting them to the full body and making sure these positive changes become law. A few details on each:

  • HF 3552 - This bill provides a way for a historical building to convert to condominium use. It was heard in the Civil Law Committee on Tuesday and will next head to the House Floor. This is part of building upon the sweeping, positive changes to condo and townhouse law that I championed last session.
  • HF 2743 - This bill will adjust the statute of limitations on construction defects to be more consumer and builder-friendly to the detriment of trial lawyers. Both of these are important bills that I look forward to guiding through the legislature this year

Repaying Deputy Registrars

On Thursday, the House almost unanimously passed a bill to provide $9 million of aid to deputy registrars to help offset the numerous costs incurred following the rollout of the state’s vehicle licensing system, MNLARS. Through no fault of their own, deputy registrars across the state were having to deal with MNLARS causing delays, slow processing times, and a need to staff for overtime work.

Those in charge of MNLARS need to recognize their failure to put out a working system is costing Minnesota registrars and citizens dearly. I’m glad members of both parties voted to pass this legislation today to help ease some of the pain experienced by our hardworking registrars and look forward to the Senate taking action soon.

This month's town hall will take place on Saturday, April 28, 2018, from 10-11 AM at the Maple Grove Community Center. Hope you can make it!
