Legislative Update from Rep. Randy Jessup

Friday, April 13, 2018

Dear Neighbors,

A reminder that I am hosting a “Java with Jessup” event this Saturday at the Caribou Coffee in Mounds View (2585 Mounds View Boulevard). The event will take place from 9:00-10:30 am and is an opportunity for you to stop by and chat about the legislative session over a cup of coffee. I hope to see you there!

On Wednesday, I had a bill hearing before the House Education Finance Committee that will provide up to $250,000 for the Mounds View school district.  The appropriation is to provide postsecondary credit scholarships for teachers who teach concurrent enrollment courses through the district’s Early College program.

Mounds View’s Early College program gives students the ability to earn free college credits while still enrolled in high school. Expansion of the program to 'Pathways to Possibilities' is scheduled for this fall and will offer 6 distinct vocation choices.

In order to continue teaching these high-rigor courses, Mounds View district teachers soon will be required to hold a master’s degree in their field or a master’s degree plus 18 graduate-level, discipline-specific credits. The $250,000 will facilitate Mounds View’s continuing ability to offer college credit courses to our high school students.

The Mounds View School District’s “Early College” program is an innovative education model for the rest of Minnesota’s schools.  With college costs continuing to rise, this program gives Mounds View students the ability to earn college credit while attending high school. I am proud to author this legislation and appreciate my colleagues’ support.

Additionally, I had a bill approved by the House on Thursday afternoon that amends statutes pertaining to credit union governance.  The bill was supported by both the Minnesota Credit Union Network and the Department of Commerce and passed the House on a unanimous 127-0 vote.
