Legislative Update from Rep. Bahr

Thursday, March 29, 2018

Greetings from St. Paul,

First, I would like to wish a Happy Easter to all. The weekend starts with a somber reminder of Jesus’ suffering on Good Friday but ends with the celebration of the miracle of His resurrection. From my family to yours, Happy Easter.

Tax Conformity

One of the bigger issues we are facing relates to conforming with the new federal tax laws. Thus far, we have seen Governor Dayton use this as an opportunity to raise taxes and increase spending. We have a budget surplus, indicating that hardworking Minnesotans are overtaxed already. There is absolutely no financial reason we should be raising taxes.

I expect we will be hearing the House Republican tax conformity bill when we resume the legislative session after Easter break. We have to lead the way in providing a tax system that is transparent and based on generating revenue, not on social engineering.

Committee Deadlines

It is almost April, and today is the second committee deadline. We are hearing and discussing lots of bills and I would encourage you to come to the Capitol to testify on any legislation you are passionate about. Now is the time to be involved and have your views heard.
