Putting Student Safety First

Thursday, March 29, 2018

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Here is an update with the latest news from the Capitol.

In this Issue:

  • Student Safety Package
  • Easter/Passover Message
  • Peppin’s MinnTriv

Student Safety Package

Earlier today, House Republicans unveiled a legislative package that will help keep our students and schools safe. Our comprehensive approach partners with local school districts to provide them with the funding and flexibility they need to do everything from hiring more on-site school police officers and mental health professionals, to making critical security upgrades to facilities.

Some of the highlights in our student safety package include:

  • School resources officers, student support personnel, and other school security programs funded through increased Safe Schools revenue, including a minimum level of funding for small schools.
  • School facility security upgrades, and expanded use of Facility Maintenance revenue for security projects, including emergency communications systems.
  • School-linked mental health programing to ensure better outcomes for all kids.
  • Physical security audit grants to provide state assistance to review facility security and crisis management policies.
  • Suicide prevention training for teachers to help educators learn how to engage and assist students experiencing mental distress.
  • School-based threat assessment teams established to assess, intervene, and report threats facing students, teachers, and staff.

This package means that districts can make decisions that best fit the needs of their students and schools, and most importantly—our proposal puts the safety of Minnesota kids first.

Wishing You a Happy Easter and Passover

As many families head into a long holiday weekend, I wanted to take this opportunity to wish you and yours a Happy Easter and Passover. I look forward to spending Easter with my family, and hope you are able to spend quality time with your loved ones as well.

There are a number of activities happening throughout our community and across the metro over the weekend. Minnesota’s largest indoor Easter egg hunt is on Sunday, April 1 in Maple Grove. You can learn more about the event and how to register at www.bestegghunt.com.

For other family-friendly activities happening this weekend including more egg hunts, bunny sightings, egg dyeing and more, you can check out this link here that has events throughout the Twin Cities.

Have a wonderful Easter and Passover.

Peppin’s MinnTriv

Thank you to everyone who participated in the last Peppin’s MinnTriv. The question was: In their entire 57-year history, the Twins have only had six pitchers who have struck out 15 or more batters in a game. Name the first two Twins pitchers to strike out 15 batters in a single game.

The answer was Camilo Pascual and Joe Decker.

There were some close guesses, but no correct responses last week.

Here is this week’s question:

Which Minnesota governor was the first to appear on the cover of Time Magazine?

The THIRD correct response will be featured in the next email update.
