Legislative Update from Rep. Randy Jessup

Friday, March 16, 2018

Dear Neighbors,

Last week, I held my first town hall meeting of the year. Around 45 people showed up to the town hall and we discussed a number of topics including tax reform, school safety, healthcare, and transportation. It was a lively but respectful and courteous discussion. Thank you to those that were able to attend.

It was another busy week in St. Paul. Committees continue to meet and work through legislation as the first committee deadline is fast approaching and a number of constituent advocacy groups visited as well.

One piece of legislation I’d like to highlight deals with healthcare costs. House File 3543 reduces the tax on individual and small group health plans sold through MNsure. More specifically, it cuts this tax from 3.5% to 2%. It is estimated that this will save Minnesotans around $30 million on their healthcare. This is another important step in lowering the costs of health insurance.

Additionally, a number of school safety related bills have been moving through the legislature in recent weeks. These bills have generally been focused on bolstering school safety and giving tools to local school districts to keep their students safe. Some of the initiatives include increasing funds for school resource officers, training for school district personnel to identify warning signs, boosting funds for mental health identification in schools, and more.

Finally, on Wednesday, Governor Dayton gave his final State of the State speech. I appreciate the Governor’s service to our state over the last eight years and wish him all the best in his political retirement.
