News from Rep. Keith Franke 3-2-2018

Friday, March 2, 2018

Dear Neighbors,

Lots is happening in St. Paul and I want to make sure you’re up-to-date on the latest news. This week, we learned our state’s budget forecast, I introduced legislation to help our area, presented an important bill in committee, and learned more about the 3M contamination situation.

Budget Forecast

We last received a budget forecast in November, and the news wasn’t good. Thankfully, things really turned around; on Wednesday, we found out we have a $329 million surplus. That’s much better than what we thought just a few months ago. Our efforts to reduce taxes on hardworking families is helping the average Minnesotan, and aiding in growing our state’s economy.

Local Bills

With a surplus, there’s a potential for another bonding bill this year. I’m working on two local bills that could be included if we have a bonding proposal. As you know, the Capital Investment Committee toured the South St. Paul Library and Seidl Lake to get a better feel for these potential projects. I have language for two bills to fund these projects which would be a big benefit for our area.

Opioid Epidemic

One of my focuses this session is helping those struggling with addiction. The opioid epidemic continues to grow in our state, and we have to take steps to stop it from hurting more families. On Thursday, I presented a bill in committee to limit opioid misuse.

Lots of times, we see excessive opioid prescriptions for routine medical procedures. This leaves the door open for opioid misuse and potential addiction. We need to take steps to stop that before it happens; enough lives have been lost already.

3M Hearing

I was able to stop in to the Environment Committee hearing as they were discussing the settlement between 3M and the state of Minnesota. It was informative to hear the concerns of committee members relating to the contamination in the east metro.

I was happy to see St. Paul Park City Administrator Kevin Walsh and Public Works Supervisor Jeff Dionisopoulos in attendance. I’m continuing to work with state and local officials - like Kevin and Jeff - to ensure our area is protected now and into the future.
