Legislative Update from Rep. Dario Anselmo and Survey

Friday, March 2, 2018

Dear Neighbor,

Here is an update with the latest news from around the Capitol and community.

Budget Forecast

On Wednesday, Minnesota Management and Budget released the February Economic Budget Forecast, showing our state has a $329 million surplus. This is a more than half a billion dollar increase from the November forecast, and shows that our economy is strong and tax relief is having a positive impact.

Gun Safety

This week, the House Public Safety Committee held a hearing on two gun safety proposals. It was moving to hear from the many advocates who came to the Capitol to share their stories and champion gun safety reform.

I have signed onto one of the bills heard on Thursday, House File 1669, as a co-author. The bill would close loopholes in law and expand background checks for the transfer of guns between private parties. While no one bill will solve all of our problems, I am supportive of what I believe or commonsense steps that make our state safer and protect Minnesotans from gun violence.

Suicide Prevention Bill

This week I introduced House File 3167 which will appropriate funding for grants to help train educators on suicide prevention. The evidence-based training will help educators learn how to engage and help students experiencing mental distress.

Addressing mental health in our schools helps address school safety, helps reach students in need, and can lead to better outcomes for Minnesota kids. HF 3167 will receive its first committee hearing next week in the Education Finance Committee, and I will be advocating for it to become law this session.
