Legislative Update (February 23, 2018)

Friday, February 23, 2018

Dear Neighbors,

We’re now back in St. Paul, and the 2018 session is underway. The fast pace has already started, and I’ve enjoyed seeing a number of local residents at the Capitol. Though we have a short session, there’s much to accomplish for Minnesotans.

Healthcare

This year, my hope is to target a number of issues related to heathcare. Republican-led reforms put a halt to four-straight years of double-digit premium increases. Our nationally recognized reinsurance program helped right some of the high costs and decreased choices created by Obamacare. This isn’t something we can fix overnight, and I expect we’ll continue to look for solutions this year. Personally, I’m working on a bill aiding our handicapped and aging communities, and address the current provider shortage. Since coming to the legislature, healthcare has been one of the topics I’ve focused on, and the upcoming session will be no different.

Met Council Reform

I also think we’ll tackle some big transportation issues this year. I believe the time is right to enact significant Met Council reforms in order to increase their accountability to Twin Cities residents.

Fixing MNLARS

We also have to ensure the state is doing their part to fix the new licensing system debacle, MNLARS. This 10-year, $100 million project is already over budget and now the Minnesota Department of Public Safety is asking for MORE money. The utter waste of taxpayer dollars for a failed product is maddening. In the legislature, we need to make sure those in charge of MNLARS can deliver a working product for Minnesotans; they deserve it.

Though it’s not a budget year, the 2018 legislative session is a chance to continue our work on behalf of hardworking Minnesotans. We’re hopeful for a budget surplus, but won’t know details until the forecast comes out in the coming weeks. If you have suggestions or ideas for bills, or just want to share your opinion, please feel free to call or email my office at 651-296-5185 or rep.tony.albright@house.mn.

Have a great weekend,
