Legislative Update (February 19, 2018)

Monday, February 19, 2018

Greetings,

We’re just one day away from the start of the 2018 legislative session. I always look forward to the fast pace and especially meeting with residents of our area. Before we start, here’s a quick look at some topics we might discuss this year.

Tax Conformity: Recently, Congress passed significant tax relief into federal law. We’re already seeing bonuses for many employees, and significant investment in business expansion in America. Though it was important to pass tax relief at the federal level, it now means it’s the legislature’s job to pass a bill to conform to the new code. This is an extremely complicated process as we want to make filing taxes as easy as possible in 2019.

Health Care: Last year, we made important progress by ending four-straight years of double-digit health insurance premium increases. Our reinsurance program proved to be successful in reversing some of the ill effects of Obamacare on our state. Again, this will be a point of emphasis this year as we look for more long-term solutions.

Local Project: We don’t yet know if the state will have a surplus; we’ll have to wait until the forecast later this month. If we do have a surplus as many expect, we could see another bonding bill this year. If that happens, I plan to push hard for funds to lessen the cost of dredging Lake Orono in Elk River. It’s been 20 years since the lake was dredged and it’s long overdue to happen again.

Please Contact Me: Session is starting tomorrow and I’d love to hear your questions, comments, or concerns regarding any issue related to state government. Please feel free to contact me at either 651-296-4237, or rep.nick.zerwas@house.mn.

Sincerely,
