Capitol Newsletter from Rep. John Poston

Friday, February 9, 2018

Greetings,

Earlier this week, I visited with representatives from the Gull Chain of Lakes Association where we discussed a number of issues to improve water quality and combat aquatic invasive species in our area.

The chain of lakes play a vital role in our local economy, helping to bring millions of dollars to our area every summer and fall. Given this, ensuring that our lakes and water are clean and usable is important not only for the entire state but specifically for communities in our area.

Thank you to Senate Majority Leader Gazelka and the members of the association that were able to attend this important meeting.

Tax Relief and Minnesota’s Growing Economy
It's been nearly two decades since Minnesotans have received meaningful tax relief. This past session, I worked hard to deliver significant tax relief and ultimately helped pass into law $650 million in tax relief for Minnesota families over the next two years, and $790 million in 2020-2021. Specific relief included:

  • Nearly 284,000 senior citizen tax returns will receive tax reductions; 72,000 of those will no longer pay state income tax on their social security benefits.
  • A family of four making $50,000 a year will receive an additional $1,200 toward their child care expenses.
  • 65,000 students will receive an average of a $414 reduction in their taxes through a new tax credit for student loan payments.
  • Every Minnesota business owner will see relief from an “extra” business tax.
  • 240,000 farmers will receive property tax relief to reduce their disproportionate share of school district debt service.

Additionally, President Trump and Congress passed Federal Tax Reform late last year – cutting taxes and simplifying the tax filing process for all Americans. On that note, our economy here in Minnesota has continued to improve in recent months. Highlights of this growth include:

  • Minnesota unemployment, currently at 3.1 percent, is at its lowest level since July 2000.
  • Since President Obama left office, more Minnesotans have found jobs, dropping unemployment from 4.0 percent to 3.1 percent.
  • For the first time in years, Minnesota is creating jobs at the same pace as the rest of the country.

Simply said, things are looking up for our economy and job numbers here in Minnesota. I remain committed to doing what I can to ensure these positive numbers continue.
