Rep. Haley Legislative Update (1-8)

Monday, January 8, 2018

Hello Friends and Neighbors,

I hope you had a relaxing couple weeks over the holidays, and are enjoying the much-needed warm-up. With the holidays behind us, we’ll start to see more meetings and hearings in St. Paul as we get ready for the next legislative session in February. I’m excited to start this process again, and look forward to hearing from you as things progress. In this update, I want to provide you with background on a joint committee called the Legislative-Citizen Commission on Minnesota Resources and recognize some shining stars from area high schools.

LCCMR Proposal:

The Legislative-Citizen Commission on Minnesota Resources (LCCMR) is a joint committee made up of legislators and every-day citizens who identify potential projects around the state that meet the requirements for the Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund. This is a permanent dedicated fund in the Minnesota state treasury that was established by 77% voter approval of a constitutional amendment in 1988. The amendment directs forty percent of the net proceeds of the Minnesota State Lottery into the Trust Fund. The Trust Fund is intended to provide a long-term, stable source of funding for innovative and far-sighted activities that protect and enhance Minnesota’s environment and natural resources for the benefit of current citizens and future generations.

Recently, the city of Red Wing was notified that the LCCMR selected the Mississippi Blufflands State Trail (Riverfront Trail) as a project they’ll recommend to receive $550,000 in funding. This is great news as a recommendation from the LCCMR goes a long way in garnering support in the legislature. Obviously, there’s many other projects also worthy of funding, but this is a critical step as we try to complete this initiative for our area. I’ll keep you posted as this continues its forward momentum.

Area Students Shining:

I'm always so proud of the scholars, athletes, musicians and other talented young people in our local schools. At the recent Youth in Government (YIG) gathering in St. Paul, about 2,000 students from around the state came to the Capitol to participate in a mock state government. YIG is a fantastic annual program, sponsored by the YMCA, that allows students to learn about state government in a real hands-on session. The Red Wing YMCA is known for having one of the largest and most professional delegations of students year after year. This year was no different as Cayanne Korder was elected to be Governor for the 2018 session and her brother Caleb was chosen to be President of the Senate! These are big honors; congrats, Cayanne and Caleb! Side note: Back in the day, I was in YIG...

Our young people are even making an impact at the international level. Taylor Heise of Lake City is currently captaining Team USA’s U-18 Women’s Team at the U-18 World Championships in Russia! Taylor and Team USA have won their first two games and play Canada tomorrow to close out the preliminary round. Good luck the rest of the tournament, Taylor; bring home the gold! Here's the link to follow them.
