EMAIL UPDATE: FEBRUARY 26, 2009

Greetings from the Capitol,

Much has happened during this past week. Hereís a sampling of the highlights.

In this issue:
1. Legislative Survey
2. Visiting With Local Residents
3. Voter ID Bill Voted Down
4. Donít Spend More Than You Earn

1. Legislative Survey
It is truly an honor to represent you in St. Paul. It is a humbling experience that I greatly enjoy. In order to represent you better I welcome your thoughts and comments on any legislative issue. I have also made available my 2009 Legislative Survey which you can take online at www.house.mn/49A. If you have other thoughts or comments please feel free to email me or call my office.

2. Visiting With Local Residents
This session I have met with many local residents at my office in St. Paul and here in the district. Meeting with constituents is one of the highlights of my day in St. Paul. If you ever have the opportunity to visit the Capitol, I encourage you to contact my office and set up an appointment.

I would also like to thank everyone who attended my Town Hall Meeting this past Saturday. I always enjoy engaging with the folks I represent.

There were a number of good ideas on how to improve government those in attendance shared with me. Some of these ideas included how to change the property tax system and modifying the education funding formulas. The best ideas often come from citizens, and I would encourage you to contact me with yours.

3. Legislative Budget Hearing
Here is one last reminder about the Budget Hearing coming up in Coon Rapids tonight (the 26th). It is a chance for citizens to let Legislative Leaders know where you stand on the issues of state spending levels, tax rates, and your thoughts on what should be done to deal with the deficit, predicted to be as high as $7 billion.

I will be attending this meeting, along with other elected officials from our area. I encourage you to mark this on your calendar and try to attend. Other meetings have seen large crowds, and so I would encourage you to sign up to make sure you have the opportunity to share your thoughts by visiting http://www.house.mn/budgetsignup.asp?loc=CoonRapids.

4. Donít Spend More Than You Earn
On Monday on the House Floor my colleague Paul Kohls tried to offer a House Resolution that would have set the amount of money the state can spend this biennium to the amount of money it takes in. This simple spending formula is one that every family uses.

Unfortunately this resolution was not even allowed to be brought to the House Floor. Instead of even talking about this common sense idea, the Democrat led majority decided theyíd rather go home for the day. While we will try to bring forth this proposal again, itís disheartening the Majority is silencing the Minority and not even allowing the opportunity to speak on the issue.

And lastly I would encourage you to contact me on any legislative issue or questions you may have. You can reach me via email at rep.peggy.scott@house.mn, by phone at (651) 296-4231, or by U.S. Mail at Rep. Peggy Scott, 225 State Office Building, 100 Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., St. Paul, MN 55155.

Thank you again for the opportunity to serve you.

Sincerely,
Peggy
