Legislative Update

Friday, November 17, 2017

Dear Neighbors,

This week the Senate held a hearing on Minnesota’s new program MNLARS (Minnesota Licensing and Registration System) which has been continually plagued with difficulties since it launched this summer. The House held a committee hearing earlier this fall in an attempt to get the bottom of the issue, and House Republicans also set up a comment page to gather information about the experiences and difficulties folks are facing. For many Minnesotans trying to do simple tasks like updating tabs, transferring license plates, or transferring titles, the process has gone from simple to frustrating.

Those testifying before the committee that shared the significant failures of MNLARS included license center workers and auto dealers. Licensing centers have blown through entire overtime budgets in just a few months because of the glitches and problems with the system. The time to get titles has tripled in some cases hurting businesses and buyers. And what’s worse still is that hardworking taxpayers funded MNLARS to the tune of more than $90 million, and it continues to fail the citizens it’s meant to serve.

Legislators are continuing their examination into MNLARS in an attempt to help the people of our state and find solutions. This program was not ready to be launched and should not have moved forward this summer.

Additionally, on that note I would like to add that if you have had issues with MNLARS and need assistance, please don’t hesitate to contact my office. I am here to serve you!
