Legislative Update

Friday, October 27, 2017

Greetings friends and neighbors,

What a change from last week! I was gloating about the beautiful, warm fall weather and now we are experiencing our first snow! Drive safely everyone and I hope all the young kids enjoy Halloween on Tuesday.

I’m often asked, “Barb, what do you do when the legislature isn’t in session?”  Early in the summer I was busy doing town halls and meeting with community groups to discuss the outcomes of the session. In addition to responding to constituents, I use the time away from St. Paul to connect with businesses and organizations so that I can learn more about their needs and how government can help improve all of our lives. I also study and do my own research on policy issues so that I am prepared for policy debates in the upcoming session. The following pictures are a brief snapshot of this out-of-session work.

Last week, I, along with Rep. Marion O’Neill, member of the Public Safety and Security Committee, which oversees the Minnesota Department of Corrections, toured the Red Wing Correctional Facility. The Committee is touring multiple correctional facilities around the state before the 2018 Legislative Session in order to learn more on how to improve Minnesota’s prison system.

This week, I attended the Manufacturers Appreciation Luncheon put on by the Red Wing Area Chamber of Commerce and the Manufacturers Association. It’s important to recognize the important economic impact of our area manufacturers!

Last evening, I met with residents and staff of Lutheran Social Services Group Homes. They serve hundreds of disabled adults who live in in-home settings throughout our community. It was a moving experience to have these adults tell me in their own words how important their home and care providers are to them!

Finally – I want to let you know about another informational session by 40 Square. In last week’s email update, I discussed legislation that was passed this previous session that now allows organizations with member owners, such as farm cooperatives, to provide health insurance for their members in order to reduce costs. 40 Square Cooperative Solutions, which has been working to get this idea up and running, will be holding an informational meeting in our community on Monday, October 30th, at the Ag Partners-Main Office in Goodhue (101 Broadway Ave). The event starts at 4:00 PM, I encourage all farmers and other agricultural workers to attend! Check out their website for more information.

Drug Take Back Day

Tomorrow, October 28, from 10 AM – 2 PM, is National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. Please consider cleaning out old and unused prescriptions from your medicine cabinets, and bringing these containers to a local depository to safely dispose of these dangerous drugs. Click here to find the closest depository.

Thank you in advance in doing all that you can to make sure these dangerous drugs do not end up on our streets!
