Legislative update (9-26-17)

Tuesday, September 26, 2017

Dear Neighbor,

The Star Spangled Banner has been a major subject in the news and on social media in recent days. I came across a video which provides some historical context to how that song became our national anthem.

I enjoyed that video and want to share it with you because a growing crisis of civics knowledge in society these days seems to include a lack of understanding for the Star Spangled Banner. I remember when important lessons about the anthem were taught in our grade schools but, unfortunately, that practice has faded over the years.

Here’s to hoping you will share with our younger generations the story of the Star Spangled Banner (and our flag) so they may endure as a proud symbols of the liberties we enjoy in the United States of America, the greatest nation this world has ever known.

On a different subject, I encourage high school juniors to apply to serve as pages at the Capitol during the 2018 session. Minnesota is one of very few states to offer this opportunity, which allows students to work behind the scenes of the Legislature to get a real, up-close understanding of how our state government functions. Pages attend meetings with legislators, constitutional officers, members of the judiciary and others. They also help out on House floor during sessions and participate in mock committee hearings.

The deadline to apply is Dec. 1 and more information is available at this link or by calling (651) 296-7452. Local schools also can help provide guidance.

Finally, I want to pass along word that the Minnesota Department of Revenue is reminding Minnesota’s military service members to take advantage of tax credits before they expire. The department reports that over 1,500 Minnesota service members are still eligible to claim 2013 military tax credits, worth $120 per month, or partial month served. To qualify for the credit, service members must meet the following requirements:

  • Served in a combat zone or qualified hazardous-duty area anytime on or after January 1, 2013
  • Been a Minnesota resident during the time of service
  • Received combat pay which is exempt from federal and Minnesota income tax

Applications must be postmarked by Oct. 16. Click here for more information and please pass this message along to any veterans you think it may help.

Sincerely,

Steve
