Greetings,

Today we remember those Americans who lost their lives on September 11th, 2001. May they never be forgotten!

On Friday, I, members from the technology industry, and other lawmakers were hosted by VSI Labs in St. Louis Park to learn more about how they research and test self-driving car technology. With this technology on the horizon, it is important that the state be ready to incorporate it in everyday life on the road. Boston Consulting Group has projected that 13 years from now (2030) ‘Shared Self-Driving’ vehicles will be responsible for 25% of all miles driven on our roads.

Over the weekend, I joined other lawmakers visiting the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe. It was a wonderful opportunity to sit in the bottom of a canoe and harvest wild rice. This natural resource is a substantial food crop that contributes over $2 million annually to our state’s economy.

School Supply Tax Benefits:

I hope that the students in our community had a great first week of school! If you still have some school supplies shopping left to do or have saved your receipts from previous school shopping trips this year, you may qualify for tax incentives to help lower the annual expense of school supplies. Minnesota has both a tax credit and subtraction for education expenses!

Items that qualify are: writing utensils, textbooks, musical instrument rentals, as well as other school supplies. While the education subtraction is not subject to income limits, the credit is limited to households with low to median incomes. According to the Department of Revenue, last year nearly 200,000 families took advantage of the education subtraction and more than 43,000 families took advantage of the education credit.
