Monday, September 11, 2017

Greetings!

Today marks the 16th anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks.

Our Nation was shaken that day, but we will never fall and we will Never Forget!

Supreme Court Order:

On Friday, the Minnesota Supreme Court issued an order regarding the lawsuit filed by the Legislature challenging the constitutionality of the Governor’s line-item veto of the operational funding of the Legislature. Many initial reports by the Twins Cities media were incorrect, so I want to offer some clarification. The order is essentially a “punt;” it did not render a decision on the case, nor did it overturn the lower court's ruling that stated the Governor’s veto of the Legislature’s funding is unconstitutional. Instead, the Court has ordered that the Legislature go into mediation with the Governor. I am optimistic that the final result will ultimately restore the people’s voice at the Capitol.

You can read the court order here.

School Supply Tax Benefits:

I hope that the students in our community had a great first week of school! If you still have some school supplies shopping left to do or you have saved your receipts from previous school shopping trips made this year, you might qualify for tax incentives to help lower the annual expense of school supplies. Minnesota has both a tax credit and subtraction for education expenses!

Items that qualify are: writing utensils, textbooks, musical instrument rentals, as well as other school supplies. While the education subtraction is not subject to income limits, the credit is limited to households with incomes less than $37,500 with 1-2 children, $39,500 with 3 children, and adding $2,000 per child for households with 4 or more children. According to the Department of Revenue, nearly 200,000 families took advantage of the education subtraction with more than 43,000 families taking advantage of the education credit, saving an average of $242.
