Legislative Update

Thursday, July 27, 2017

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Here is an update with the latest news from the Capitol.

New Laws Take Effect August 1

Many policy-related laws passed earlier this session will take effect on August 1, 2017.

Highlights of legislation taking effect next month include:

  • A new law that will give insurance companies the ability to limit life insurance payouts to beneficiaries who are suspected of terrorism
  • The creation of a comprehensive statewide plan by the Departments of Health and Human Services to combat the spread of HIV/AIDS in Minnesota
  • A new civil forfeiture law which will allow co-owners of seized vehicles to petition the court to have it returned
  • An increase in penalties for those impersonating a police officer or military

You can learn more about these and other new laws taking effect on August 1 by checking out this press release put together by House Public Information Services.

Capitol Grand Opening Celebration

The four-year renovation and restoration of Minnesota’s State Capitol is truly spectacular, and I hope Woodbury residents of all ages will come down to Saint Paul and celebrate the grand re-opening of the People’s House August 11-13. There are events for kids, families and adults including Capitol tours, fireworks, a beer garden, yoga and so much more. I hope you will come down and celebrate our Capitol building with Minnesotans from across the state!

More information on the schedule, ticketed events, transportation and Capitol renovations can be found at mn.gov/admin/capitol-grand-opening.

Woodbury Days is Coming Soon!

Woodbury Days is coming August 25-27 at Ojibway Park. Come celebrate our great city, chat with local business owners, visit neighbors, support some great local causes and enjoy the many fun events throughout the weekend!

You can learn about all the great family-friendly events, volunteer opportunities and more at www.woodburydays.com.
