Legislative Update from Rep. Anna Wills

Friday, July 21, 2017

Dear Friends,

This summer seems to be going by so quickly, which means we have some wonderful events coming up as well! Here are a couple of items to mark on your calendars. There has also been some progress regarding the Legislature’s lawsuit against Governor Dayton.

District Court Ruling

This week, a district court judge struck down Gov. Mark Dayton’s unprecedented attempt to line-item veto the Legislature’s funding, which would have virtually eliminated our legislative branch in Minnesota.

The ruling from the district court is very good news for Minnesotans because it will mean their voice remains intact at the Capitol, and protects the separate but equal branches of government laid out in Minnesota’s constitution. Governor Dayton immediately decided that instead of allowing this verdict to stand, he would appeal the ruling, and has already put the wheels in motion to appeal this case to the Minnesota Supreme Court.

We hope the Supreme Court will rule quickly and uphold the district court’s decision. I will keep you updated as this situation continues to progress.

Rosemount AA+ Credit Rating

Recently it was announced that Standard and Poor's (S&P) Financial Services has give the City of Rosemount a AA+ credit rating! This high credit rating means that the City of Rosemount will be able to get favorable interest rates on loans to build infrastructure for its citizens, and reflects strong financial management on the City's behalf. Congratulations to the City of Rosemount for this hard-earned rating!"

Delays at the DMV

A computer upgrade for our state's Department of Motor Vehicles will mean delays starting this weekend and running through the 24th. Some DMV locations may close all together, so if you are planning to stop by your local DMV this weekend, you may want to call ahead and plan extra time for your trip! Online tab renewals will be unavailable through the 24th as well.

MN Zoo Kangaroo Crossing

An event that has been ongoing at the Zoo this summer is their Kangaroo Crossing experience. Guests will have the chance to view different Australian Outback species, including wallabies and red kangaroos, with minimal separation from these creatures! This exhibit will run through Labor day, and is included in the price of admission to the MN Zoo. For more information on this opportunity, see the event page a this link: http://mnzoo.org/kangaroo-crossing/

Ben Kopp Memorial Bridge Dedication Ceremony

The Ben Kopp Memorial Bridge dedication ceremony will be on August 2nd. The ceremony will take place at the Rosemount Central Park Amphitheater, and guest speakers will include myself, Sen. Greg Clausen, and Mayor Bill Droste of Rosemount.

Signs have already gone up at the US HWY 52 at County Road 46 Bridge remembering Ben. This bridge is the first bridge in our state to be named to memorialize a fallen soldier, and it has been such a privilege to do my part in honoring his legacy. I hope to see you at the dedication.
