Drew's News: Compromise Budget on Governor Dayton's Desk

Friday, May 26, 2017

Friends,

On Friday morning, the Minnesota House of Representatives and Senate concluded the special session by passing the final bills that comprise the state's budget. In all, the legislature passed seven bills during special session: Taxes, Transportation, State Government, Health and Human Services, K-12 Education, Bonding, and Labor Standards.

This session was defined by bipartisan compromise between the Republican House and Senate and Governor  Dayton. I am particularly proud of delivering the largest tax relief in nearly two decades, making the largest investment in our roads and bridges without raising taxes, and increased school funding while also adding much needed reforms to make sure the best teachers stay in the classroom. We made great strides this session to make Minnesota a better place to live, work, and raise a family.

The Republican-led tax bill will mean more than $650 million in tax relief—the largest tax cut in nearly two decades over half of which is directed at middle-class Minnesotans. It includes relief for seniors on social security, college graduates with student loan debt, and property tax relief for farmers and Minnesota businesses. In addition, Republicans championed and the legislature approved the largest investment in road and bridge infrastructure in a state history without an increase in the gas tax or license tab fees.

Memorial Day

This weekend I'll be thinking about my grandfather Donald Peterson and the brave men he fought alongside during World War 2 who made the ultimate sacrifice for our great nation. It's thanks to these men and women who gave their lives that men like my grandfather were able to return home to continue enjoying the great freedoms we enjoy as Americans. It's important that we honor their sacrifice by remembering them and cherishing that freedom.
