Budget update

Tuesday, May 23, 2017

Dear Neighbor,

There remains cautious optimism here at the Capitol today as the Legislature and the governor reached a general agreement on the overall framework of the new budget just before midnight last night.

The 2017 regular session was required to adjourn at midnight last night in accordance with the Constitution, however the governor called us back into a special session one minute after midnight. With a general agreement in place, we, the governor and the staff simply needed more time to work out the details.

We are scheduled to be back on the House floor at 3 p.m. today. We will work as late as necessary to finalize the details and pass them so we can get them to the governor. I expect we will adjourn sometime tomorrow morning.

We are still on track for significant tax reform, critical new investments in transportation infrastructure, as well as a major capital investment bonding bill. These items have been important priorities necessary to move our economy forward and begin to catch up on fixing our roads and bridges.

Once we have finished the details and our work has the governor’s signature, I will address the various budget areas in separate updates.  We have five bills completed, with another seven bills to finish by tomorrow morning.

Stay tuned!

Sincerely,

Dale
