Legislative Update from Rep. Dario Anselmo

Friday, May 19, 2017

Dear Neighbor,

Here is an update from the Capitol.

Budget Negotiations

Last week, the House and Senate came to agreements on balanced budget bills that will fully fund state government for the next two years. I supported all but one, where I had concerns about a lack of clean energy provisions.

Legislation passed includes a significant transportation package with more than $5 billion to fix our roads and bridges, and funding to help relieve congestion on our state’s busiest highways. That bill also ensured continued bus service in the metro area thanks to increased funding for cost-effective transit options.

Our education bill included $1.14 billion in increased funding that put more dollars in every classroom, and committed $378 million for proven, targeted early learning initiatives. It also had a provision I championed so Edina kids can go to Edina schools.

Other highlights include a meaningful tax relief bill, legislation that protects our state’s most vulnerable, higher education tuition freezes and reductions, and support for pollinator research.

Governor Dayton vetoed these bills, and my hope is that as we continue to negotiate, the legislation continues to improve including a 2 percent and 2 percent per pupil funding formula increase for education, and additional funding for the University of Minnesota. I remain hopeful that we can get our work done on time for the people and priorities of our state. I will share more with you soon as we work toward an agreement.

Real ID

I know many people in our community contacted me about Real ID this session, and I am pleased to report that it was signed by Governor Dayton this week. Getting this bill into law ensures that your Minnesota-issued identification will continue to be an accepted form of identification to fly on an airplane, access a federal facility, or visit a military base.

This was a top priority for many across our state, and I am glad Minnesotans will have peace of mind that their driver’s license will continue to work for them.
