Legislative Update-Budget Negotiations

Friday, May 12, 2017

Hello from the Capitol!

A bill (Senate File 482) that I chief authored passed the House unanimously this week. This bill relates to the Board of Medical practice clarifying title protections, defining ethical behavior, and grounds for discipline for people who practice medicine. This bill has also passed the Senate and is heading to the Governor’s desk for his consideration.

Budget Negotiations:

Minnesotans expect the Legislature to work efficiently and effectively on their behalf in order to pass a responsible and balanced budget; we (the House and Senate) have been doing just that. Over the past couple weeks, conference committees have been working to find compromise on the discrepancies between each House and Senate budget proposal, as well as include provisions supported by the Governor. Even though the Governor has begun vetoing bills, I am hopeful for a willingness from him to negotiate a compromise next week.

The Legislature’s priority continues to be to provide $1.1 billion of tax relief to seniors, students, and in general: middle class Minnesotans; invest more than $1 billion in new expenditures to our schools; and pass a $5 billion long-term transportation plan that repairs and improves our aging transportation infrastructure.
