Drew's News: Budget Bills Sent to Governor

Friday, May 12, 2017

Friends,

This Thursday, May 11th marked the 159th year anniversary of Minnesota Statehood. School groups visiting the Capitol made sure to serenade the state with a strong rendition of Happy Birthday. Our work on the budget continued as we've passed a number of the compromise bills between the House & Senate. Read about a couple of them below and finally see which one of those kids on the Savage Tee-Ball team was me. Have a great Mother's Day & Fishing Opener weekend!

Tax Relief & Reform Bill Re-Passes House

Our tax bill is great news for middle-class Minnesotans who will finally see long-overdue tax relief. Families with young children will receive a tax credit for child care expenses, graduates paying back student loans will get to use a first-in-the-nation tax credit on payments, and we begin to phase out taxes on social security for middle-class seniors. This is a good bill and I hope the Governor will sign it.

Education Budget Bill Passes House & Senate

After last session's historic investments in education, House Republicans are continuing to invest in our students to make sure they get the world-class education they deserve. Our bill puts $1.1 billion in new money into education. That includes making smarter investments in early learning initiatives and reforms that will help students learn by keeping the best teachers in the classroom. I hope Governor Dayton will sign this bill to make a strong investment in education.
