Legislative Update (5-8-17)

Monday, May 8, 2017

Neighbors,

This last week, conference committees wrapped up negotiations for most of our major budget bills. These bills where negotiated within the joint budget targets that the House announced in partnership with the Senate.

It's disappointing that up until recently, the Governor Dayton chose not to participate substantially in budget target or conference committee negotiations, in spite of House and Senate Republican leadership consistently asking for his input. Again, we have stayed on-track in both the House and Senate to finish our work with time to spare, but this will mean nothing if the Governor does not plan to come to a compromise with us.

I really hope that the Governor plans to negotiate with legislators to find a compromise that addresses the needs of our state. This is a shared responsibility by elected officials. It doesn’t help Minnesotans to have their governor vetoing bills he made no attempt to change. If you have the time, please contact the Governor’s office and ask that he come to the table and negotiate these bills so that we can finish our work on time this session. I will keep you updated as we finish these last couple weeks of session.
