Greetings from the Capitol,

On Thursday, I had the honor of speaking briefly at the National Day of Prayer. Prayers for the wisdom and collaboration of our legislative leaders and the Governor are appreciated, as well as prayer for the continued strength and health of our Governor.

Bills Passing the House:

Two bills that I chief authored and presented (HF 2174 & HF 997) passed the House unanimously this week:

  • House File 2174 allows up to five full-time equivalent positions in Ramsey County to be filled by selection in a supported work program for people with disabilities who require continued support of a job coach. This bill will potentially provide savings to Ramsey County, have no impact on the state’s budget, and most importantly, will establish employment opportunities for 5 to 15 individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities.
  • House File 997 allows for all Minnesota local governmental entities to conduct electronic commerce with their vendors. Currently, school districts and some cities have this opportunity, however, restrictions still apply for other governmental entities. This legislation will eliminate these restrictions for all cities, towns, counties, and other local governmental entities. The bill also contains no fiscal impact to the state’s budget and it will increase convenience and payment efficiency for cities throughout Minnesota.

Both of these bills will be taken up for a vote in the Senate in the coming weeks.

Minnesota Budget Legislation:

Budget negotiations between House and Senate leaders with the Governor have been on-going over the past week, however, many points of difference still remain. As a result, greater compromise will need to be reached in order to complete our work and end the session on time.
