Legislative Update (5-1-17)

Monday, May 1, 2017

Neighbors,

The House passed two bipartisan prolife bills last week.  These bills dealt with abortion clinic health and safety measures, and taxpayer funding for abortion.

The first bill passed prohibits taxpayer funding of abortion in Minnesota. The Minnesota Department of Health estimates that 43% of abortions performed in our state are paid for through taxpayer-funded programs, even though a large part of our citizens are morally opposed to abortion.  Thirty three other states, and the federal government have similar laws in place already.

The second bill we passed helps to protect the health and safety of women who are faced with the choice of getting an abortion in our state. Minnesota law does not require abortion clinics to be licensed.  This bill would require clinics to be licensed if they perform ten or more abortions per month.  They must also be inspected by the Minnesota Department of Health according to the abortion industry’s own clinical standards of health and safety.  It is essential that we hold these clinics to a minimum standard of safety, sanitary conditions, and health practices to make sure that the women making this heartbreaking choice are kept safe.

I will continue to keep you updated as we finish out this session over the next few weeks.
