Captiol Update from Rep. Dan Fabian

Friday, April 21, 2017

Dear Neighbors,

Here is an update with the latest news from the Capitol.

Conference Committees Now Meeting

This week, the House and Senate appointed conferees and began meeting in conference committees to work out the differences between budget bills. I was appointed to the Environment and Natural Resources conference committee and look forward to crafting a compromise bill that best serves citizens, communities, businesses and farmers while protecting our state’s environment.

I will keep you updated as conference committees, the Legislature and Governor Dayton work toward a final compromise on these bills.

Update on Insurance Premium Relief

Minnesotans eligible for the 25 percent premium reduction that the Legislature passed at the beginning of the year should now be seeing those reductions in their bill. People will automatically see the credit on their bills, and should not need to do anything.

Folks across our state have been hurt by MNsure, Obamacare and rising premiums. I am glad that we were able to provide some immediate financial relief for families affected by skyrocketing costs as we work toward long-term solutions that will increase affordability and accessibility in Minnesota.

House File 1397

On Thursday, the House passed bipartisan legislation that will limit life insurance benefit payouts to beneficiaries of people whose death occurs directly or indirectly as a result of their furtherance of terrorism.

This is a commonsense change to law that ensures individuals don’t take advantage of life insurance policies, increasing their benefits and then committing an act of terrorism.

Around the District

Last week, the Legislature was on break, and I was able to go back up to the district and visit with folks to talk about their priorities for state government. I’d like to thank everyone who came to my town hall meetings in Roseau, Karlstad and Thief River Falls to share your input with me!

Had a great time with students competing in the First Robotics Competition. Greenbush/Middle River, Thief River Falls, Roseau and Warroad students all competed. Congratulations to Greenbush/Middle River on their win!
