Koznick Connection: Legislative Update (Feb. 27, 2017)

Monday, February 27, 2017

Dear Neighbors,

Well, the spring-like weather is gone, but thankfully our area missed much of the big snow storm. To start the week, I wanted to keep you updated on our productive last week in St. Paul.

Sunday Sales

Last week, for the first time ever, the House passed a bill to allow liquor sales on Sundays in Minnesota. It passed on a wide bipartisan vote of 85-45. Though not a top priority of mine this session, I voted for this legislation to give businesses and consumers a choice to operate or purchase liquor on Sundays. I've discussed this issue with Lakeville’s liquor store manager, we agreed on the conclusion that consumer choice on this issue was paramount. We are also working hard to provide tax relief, transportation funding, and continuing to reform health care choices.

Real ID

We also passed a bill to become compliant with the federal Real ID law. This permits Minnesota to issue new, “Real IDs” before 2018 or Minnesotans may face difficulty if they want to board airplanes or enter certain federal facilities. Although there are some concerns with this federal policy, it’s important to keep it moving through the process so Minnesotans can have peace-of-mind knowing they can travel with their state-issued ID card.

Young Women’s Initiative of Minnesota

On Thursday, I took part in the Young Women’s Initiative of Minnesota (YWI). This council, put together by Governor Mark Dayton, is a group of lawmakers, state officials, and education and business leaders. The goal of the council is to help institute the YWI Action Plan “to strategically create and advance opportunities for young women in Minnesota to achieve equity in opportunities and start eliminating barriers to ensure that all Minnesotans can live prosperous lives.”

I’m honored to have been invited to participate on this council and take part in the exciting process. As the father of two young daughters, I want to make sure all young women have every opportunity to succeed, and realize their unique American dreams. All our kids should be encouraged to reach their fullest potential.

Local Sports

Congratulations to the Lakeville North gymnastics team for winning the Class AA State Title! Also, congrats to the Lakeville North Lake Liners on their third-place finish in the kick competition of the State Tournament! Great job to both teams, we’re all very proud of you!

Lots of other local teams are now in the playoffs. Be sure to cheer on our student-athletes!

Have a great week,
