Legislative Update (February 17, 2017)

Friday, February 17, 2017

Friends,

Did you know there is almost $700 million of property that rightfully belongs to Minnesotans that is sitting in an account known as the Unclaimed Property Account? This property could be the last paycheck from an old job, a final few hundred dollars in the bank account, or an unclaimed insurance policy. All of these and many more eventually get placed into this account with the State of Minnesota.

There has been a bill introduced by Representative Regina Barr to help the process of getting this money back in the hands of Minnesotans more efficiently and more effectively. It will require that the Department of Commerce take a more active role in promoting that this fund of missing money exists and who is owed money. It will also create a reporting process that will allow the legislature to monitor progress in returning money to Minnesotans.

You can check to see if you are owed any money by checking this website: MissingMoney.com

How to follow legislation

If you have a piece of legislation you are particularly interested in or a group of bills that you are interested in, the Minnesota Legislature’s website has a tool you can use to do just that. All you need to know is your bill number and have an email address.

First, you need to create an account by visiting the “My Bills” tool which can be accessed here.

Next, let’s say you want updates on my bill to make sure Canterbury Park does not face the prospect of closing in the case of a government shutdown, which is House File 1010. To make this one of the bills you are tracking, look in the upper left hand portion of the page and click on the “Add to My Bills.”

You now will have this, and any other bill you add, conveniently in your "My Bills" section the next time you visit the Minnesota Legislature's website. There you can keep up to date on when the bill is heard in committee, votes on it, and when it is scheduled to be on the floor.

You can also access streaming video of live television productions, plus additional coverage not provided on the broadcast channel, including evening, weekend, and interim coverage.

If you have any other questions on any of my bills or anything else going on at the legislature, please reach out to my office at (651) 296-8872. You can also reach me via email at rep.bob.loonan@house.mn.

Have a great weekend,
