Honoring a local motocross star and more from the House

Friday, February 17, 2017

Dear Neighbor,

It was an honor to welcome Belle Plaine’s own motocross superstar, Ryan Dungey, to the House floor Thursday to recognize him for his achievements on and off the track.

A House resolution was presented to Ryan for his accomplishments and charity work. He has won every major title in American Motocross and Supercross and also is a key spokesperson for the LIVESTRONG campaign on cancer awareness. He has spearheaded events to benefit St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.

Please join me in commending Ryan on his accomplishments and wishing him good luck at Saturday night’s big race, the Monster Energy AMA Supercross at US Bank Stadium.

As for legislative work, the House floor remains rather quiet as we focus on putting bills through the committee rigors. I have formally introduced my bill that would help us receive more accurate information regarding how much a proposed change in law would cost taxpayers.

I provided more details on this bill during a recent email, but it is a rather complex subject. That means I continue researching the issue throughout the committee process.

People are going to come to me armed with questions, so it is my responsibility to have answers ready for what is anticipated. Others may raise questions that were not anticipated but require further research to make determinations. It is all part of the learning process and it shows exactly why the Legislature is so deliberate in making laws. It is not uncommon for bill authors to amend their own proposals along the way and we usually are better off for it in the end.

The deadline for House bills to make preliminary committee progress and remain viable for passage this session is only a few weeks away. It is a relatively aggressive deadline schedule in the House this year, designed to mitigate a backlog of work that inevitably forms during the latter stages of sessions. Only time will tell.

Sincerely,

Bob
