It’s the last weekend of Rochester’s WinterFest. There’s still plenty of great events left before we wrap up on the 12th, and I hope you make it out to enjoy this amazing tradition.
My Bills
Earlier this week, I presented my bill HF632, to the Property Tax and Local Government Finance Division. It’s a simple, common-sense bill to expand state-approved apprenticeship programs. Current law allows for townships between 2000 and 3000 residents to be exempt from paying property tax for the buildings owned for these apprenticeship initiatives. My bill would change this threshold to 1400 residents so Haverhill Township would be eligible. Again, this is a common-sense solution, but could have a big impact for job training in our area.
I’m introducing a bill soon in support of RCTC by funding the building or renovation of an addition to Endicott Hall, a new central chiller, and new academic spaces. This is such a valuable institution for Rochester and the surrounding area, and I’m happy to sponsor this bill. It’s encouraging to see Governor Dayton move this project up his priority list for the current biennium. I’m hopeful we’ll be able to work across party lines and get this bill passed.
Council Appointment
On Tuesday, Speaker Kurt Daudt appointed me to the Trade Policy Advisory Council. The 15-member council “advises and assists the governor and legislature on issues related to United States trade agreements and assesses the potential impact of federal trade agreements on the state's economy.” Federal trade agreements have recently come to light, and it’s important to advocate for our state as these are being negotiated or repealed. I’m honored to be one of just two members of the House to receive this appointment, and look forward to being a voice for Minnesota.
Senior Fraud Awareness
This morning, I joined other area legislators and members from the Department of Commerce for an informational meeting on combating fraud and scams for seniors. This was an extremely important dialogue, and I want to thank everyone who participated.
