Legislative Update (Jan. 20, 2017)

Friday, January 20, 2017

Dear Neighbors,

We’re starting the process of packed committee hearings and longer sessions on the floor. Thankfully, this means we’re making big strides to help Minnesotans around the state.

Health Care Relief and Reform

A perfect example of this progress came last night when we passed the 2017 Health Care Emergency Aid and Access bill on a bipartisan vote. This legislation would provide emergency premium relief for those buying insurance on the individual market. It also includes needed reforms, like a provision to ensure continued care in critical cases. Minnesotans entrusted a Republican House and Senate to step in and fix the problem Democrats created with Obamacare and MNsure. These short-term solutions are one step in what I hope are sweeping changes to a system that is failing many around the state.

Tax Relief Bill

Yesterday, I presented my tax relief bill, HF186, in the House Taxes Committee. The legislation would ease the tax burden on businesses or vendors who process and submit taxes to the State of Minnesota. It would put money back in the hands of retailers who are processing and doing compliance work on a daily basis.

I was fortunate to be joined by Deborah Everson, owner of Hardware Hank in Waconia, to testify in favor of the bill. Small businesses, like Deborah’s, would see a big benefit if we pass HF186 into law.

Mom and pop businesses across Minnesota will see relief when this hopefully is signed into law. We recognize that small business is critical to the economic health of Minnesota and providing relief is the best way we can show Minnesota that we are in St. Paul working for them. My bill already has bipartisan support, and I’ll keep you updated as this legislation moves forward.
