Legislative Update from Rep. Kelly Fenton

Friday, January 20, 2017

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

It’s been another busy week in Saint Paul.  Here is an update from the Capitol.

Premium Relief Passes House

On Thursday, the House passed Senate File 1—The 2017 Health Care Emergency Aid and Access Act. This legislation will provide essential premium relief to thousands of Minnesotans struggling with unaffordable insurance costs which increased on average by 50 percent or more again this year. In addition, the bill also includes a number of reforms to begin turning around our state’s MNsure mess.

The next step will be for this legislation to go to conference committee where it will be negotiated with our Senate counterparts before it repasses the legislature and is sent to Governor Dayton for his signature.

I will keep you updated on this key piece of legislation which will provide critical premium relief to thousands of Minnesotans.

Sunday Sales

Sunday Sales was debated and passed out of the Commerce and Regulatory Reform Committee earlier this week on a vote of 15-4. I am supportive of changing state law to allow for Sunday Sales and believe it is long overdue.

Consumers’ shopping habits have changed and Minnesotans are asking to have the option to purchase alcohol on Sundays. Additionally, retailers deserve to have the choice of being open on any day of the week like other businesses across the state.

The next step for Sunday Sales legislation is the House Floor, and I will keep you updated. I am hopeful that we can finally get it signed into law this year.
