News From Representative Layman 1-13-2017

Friday, January 13, 2017

Dear Neighbors,

Thanks to all who have contacted me so far this session. I’ve enjoyed hearing your opinions, and talking with you about our state’s important issues. You’re an invaluable resource to further understanding the needs and thoughts of our district, and I thank you for taking time to reach out.

Sunday Liquor Sales

A big issue we’ll debate soon in the House relates to the sale of alcohol on Sundays in Minnesota. There’ve been many attempts over the past few years to do away with the Sunday prohibition, but the Legislature has yet to pass a bill to the governor. This is a tricky issue for me as I see both sides of the argument. I’ve heard from some folks in our area, but would like input from throughout the district.

Whether you support Sunday sales or are opposed, please call or email my office and share your reasoning. Speaker of the House Kurt Daudt said we’ll likely discuss this bill in January, and it’s important for me to hear from as many constituents as possible.

Broadband Grant

Earlier this week, The Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) announced a series of grants to expand broadband access in Greater Minnesota. Thankfully, $1.74 million will go to Paul Bunyan Communications to provide or expand broadband offerings to 928 homes and 28 businesses in Becker, Hubbard, and Itasca Counties. Broadband expansion is an important way for our residents and small businesses to build our local economy. I’m thrilled to see these grant dollars going to help thousands of folks in the area.

Veterans Snowmobile Ride

Saturday marks the 9th annual MNUSA Veterans Appreciation Snowmobile Ride from Cohasset to Grand Rapids. This is a great event to honor those who have served our country. The ride starts at 9 am at Sugar Lake Lodge (37584 Otis Lane, Cohasset). If you’re planning on riding, have fun and be safe!

Please Contact Me

As I said before, please continue to call, email, or visit me in St. Paul. We’re starting to hear more bills in committee and on the floor, and I’d love your opinion on any legislative issue before us. My email is rep.sandy.layman@house.mn or you can call me at 651-296-4936.

Have a great weekend!

Sandy
