Dear Neighbor,

Week two of the legislative session has been busy as I continue working hard fighting for the values and priorities of our community.

where Rep. Lucero stopped by to give a legislative preview.

TRANSPORTATION
Corridors of Commerce is a transportation funding program that originated in 2013 and was the funding source for the I-94 lane expansion from Rogers to Saint Michael as well as the funding source for the design options study to continue I-94 lane expansion from Saint Michael to Albertville.  Corridors of Commerce requires funding renewal each budget cycle and I’m proud to chief author the Corridors of Commerce funding bill this session because of the importance of continued transportation expansion in our community.  I look forward to a hearing in the Transportation Finance Committee for this very important bill.

EQUITY IN EDUCATION
As a former educator myself I’ve often spoken about the importance of access to educational opportunities during a student’s K-12 years in order to maximize a student’s future success in life.  Ensuring access to educational opportunities for children in our community is achieved, in part, by working to close the equity in education funding gap.  Last session I chief authored three bills in the House to begin to close the funding inequity gap.  While we made progress last session, much work still remains to close the funding inequity gap.  This week I chief authored a bill that targets additional revenue to the bottom 20% funded school districts that includes the districts in our community.  I look forward to a bill hearing in the Education Finance Committee in the near future.

highlight legislative priorities including I-94 Transportation and Equity in Education Funding.

HEALTH CARE PREMIUM RELIEF
Despite the Democrat blockade last week to the Republican attempt to declare an urgency and pass the 2017 Health Care Emergency Aid and Access bill to bring emergency premium relief to Minnesotans, Republicans continue our resolve to pass premium relief and the first-steps toward badly-needed health insurance reforms. The relief and reform bill has been working its way through the committee process this week and I expect the bill to reach the full House floor next week.

2ND AMENDMENT
Last session marked significant progress advancing gun rights of law abiding citizens and the momentum to continue our successes has already begun this session.  I'm proud to co-author two gun rights bills that were introduced this week:

  • Defense of Dwelling and Person Act (also known as Stand Your Ground)
  • Constitutional Carry Act of 2017
