RELEASE: Rep. Smith Statement on REAL ID passing Civil Law & Data Practices Policy Committee

Tuesday, January 10, 2017

SAINT PAUL, MN – Today, the Civil Law & Data Practices Policy Committee passed House File 3, the REAL ID bill, out of committee and referred it to the Transportation and Regional Governance Policy Committee. Without action on REAL ID this session, Minnesota driver’s licenses will no longer be acceptable for boarding planes as well as entrance into federal facilities as soon as January of 2018.

“I am extremely pleased to see REAL ID move quickly through this committee and is another step closer to becoming law,” said Rep. Dennis Smith (R-Maple Grove), author of the bill. “This bill was crafted with a two-track system with one being an opt-in to be compliant with the federal standards and one keeping the driver’s license system exactly as it is today. Minnesotans deserve the peace-of-mind to know they can board airplanes or visit their children on military bases without needing an extra form of identification.”
