Legislative Update (Jan. 6, 2017)

Friday, January 6, 2017

Dear neighbor,

This week, I had the privilege of being sworn in for a fifth term as a member of the Minnesota House of Representatives. I’m honored to continue my service to our area, and hope you’ll contact me throughout the session to share your ideas and suggestions.

Early Legislation

Yesterday, the House passed a $22 million tax relief bill that will benefit 200,000 Minnesotans. Coming into the session, House Republicans vowed to deliver middle class tax relief, and we passed this bill on the first day possible. There will be more bills in the future to ease the tax burden, and I look forward to discussing those as they’re presented.

We also tried to bring a bill forward to help fix the Obamacare mess in Minnesota. House Democrats agreed to discuss the bill, but when push came to shove, they went back on their word and blocked debate. The legislation included $300 million of health insurance premium relief to go with common-sense reforms. It was simply a political stunt by Democrats to delay this relief. It’s disappointing, to say the least.

Ignition Interlock Hearing

You may have seen this story on the news about Minnesota’s ignition interlock program. This is a great program that helps reduce recidivism of DUIs in our state. The problem is, the Department of Public Safety started installing devices that were capable of tracking the car’s movement. As a privacy advocate, this is a shocking and invasive maneuver by the Dayton administration. Not only that, some lawyers believe it is unconstitutional.

We held a hearing on this issue, and will be working to block DPS from tracking Minnesotans. I will keep you updated as this important issue moves forward.
