Week 1 Update of the 2017 Legislative Session

Friday, January 6, 2017

Hello Neighbor,

The 2017 legislative session is officially underway. On Tuesday, I was sworn-in to serve my first term in the Minnesota House of Representatives. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to be your voice at the Capitol!

Preserving Tax Deductions for Minnesotans

The legislature has many important issues to tackle this budget-year session and we have already started quickly. Yesterday, the House passed House File 2, which conforms Minnesota tax code to the federal tax code, on a vote of 130-0. The financial result of this bill is $21.7 million in tax relief for 220,000 Minnesota tax filers. The Senate is expected to pass this bill shortly. I am hopeful that the Governor will sign this piece of legislation next week for Minnesotans to file their 2016 tax returns beginning January 23.

Committee Assignments

This session I am serving on the Education Innovation Policy, Government Operations and Elections Policy, and Higher Education and Career Readiness Policy and Finance committees. I look forward to being a leading voice for our community on these committees.

Additionally, I was chosen by my fellow freshmen members to serve as Assistant Majority Leader. This is a tremendous honor and I look forward to the opportunity to serve in House leadership.

Capitol Renovation

As you may know, the Capitol underwent a full restoration and renovation over the past few years. I am excited that most spaces have been returned to their original purpose including expanded areas for public gatherings and events.
