RELEASE: Statement from Rep. Lucero on House Republicans Take Action on Taxes, Health Care; Democrats Block Premium Relief

Thursday, January 5, 2017

Democrats who created Obamacare disaster block $300 million in relief to provide aid for skyrocketing premiums

ST. PAUL, MN—House Republicans moved to declare an urgency and pass the 2017 Health Care Emergency Aid and Access bill Thursday which would have provided health insurance premium relief, extended access to doctors for continuity of care, and begin to reform and improve the health insurance individual market. Democrats blocked the measure to expedite premium relief for Minnesotans.

"Republicans have rolled up our sleeves to help Minnesota families and businesses who are getting financially crushed with skyrocketing health care costs," Rep. Eric Lucero (R-Dayton) said. "It's incredibly disappointing Democrats blocked badly-needed premium relief. The result is Minnesotans will now have to wait even longer for premium relief and the necessary first-steps toward improvement reforms to the individual health insurance market."

A separate bill related to income tax conformity passed Thursday on a vote of 130-0. Conforming Minnesota's tax code to the federal tax code will result in $21.7 million tax relief for Minnesotans. The Senate is expected to pass tax conformity in time to meet the January 11th deadline to avoid potentially higher tax bills for those Minnesotans who file their taxes early.
