Property Tax Relief Veto Another Missed Opportunity

Dear Editor:

Every time the Governor picks up his veto pen he is missing an opportunity to engage in the real issues of the day in Minnesota and make a difference to our communities. His recent veto against millions of dollars in permanent property tax relief shows a genuine indifference and lack of leadership in delivering a fair and progressive property tax system to Minnesota homeowners.
The property tax relief bill would have provided permanent property tax relief for 99% of Minnesota property taxpayers by creating a 4th tier income tax tier on 1% of the wealthiest income earners, and using these taxes to lower property taxes for the vast majority of Minnesota homeowners and renters. Currently, these individuals pay a lower tax rate than middle-income people when all taxes are considered.
Our families have paid $2.3 billion in property tax increases over the last five years. When is this administration going to stop balancing the state budget on the back of property taxpayers? Property taxes aren't about an individual's ability to pay. These increases are literally taxing some property owners out of their homes – seniors living on fixed incomes, young families starting out, small business owners and young farmers are barely keeping their head above water.
Even the Governor's own Revenue Department reports Minnesota's tax system is becoming more regressive. Minnesota homeowners are feeling more than a pinch; they're in need of good government that will offer fair taxation to its citizens, not another year of property tax increases. The Governor missed the opportunity to work with us and deliver the relief Minnesota's have been asking for since last November.

Sincerely,

Carlos Mariani
State Representative, 65B
