Openings on citizens’ statewide fisheries, wildlife committees

Monday, September 26, 2016

ST. PAUL – The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is accepting citizen applications to fill at least 12 positions on the Fisheries Oversight and Wildlife Oversight committees. The DNR commissioner makes the appointments, which are three-year terms. About one-half of the current members’ terms expire this Dec. 14.

“This is an excellent opportunity for citizens to be involved in how license fee dollars are being spent.” Said Rep. Dale Lueck, R-Aitkin. “Committee members review the DNR’s annual Game and Fish Fund Report and prepare a report of their own findings. That report is one of many factors we use as legislators in making budgetary and policy decisions on how hunting and fishing license fee revenue is spent.”

Minnesotans who would like to serve on committees that review how the DNR spends Game and Fish Fund dollars are welcome to submit an application by 4:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 10. Application can be made at: http://survey.mn.gov/s.asp?k=147345384620.

The citizen oversight Game and Fish Fund committees have been in place since 1994. The DNR appoints at least 10 people each to the Fisheries Oversight Committee (FOC) and Wildlife Oversight Committee (WOC).

In December of each year, the DNR publishes an annual Game and Fish Fund Report on expenditures from the fund.  Each committee reviews the report in detail, discusses any issues of concern with the DNR staff, and then prepares a report on the conclusions of its review.
