Last week the Minnesota Advocates for Human Rights released a report documenting post 9/11 experiences from communities across our state. Stories of the effects of 9/11 on the day-to-day lives of Minnesotans from a diverse array of immigrants, refugees, and religious minorities were shared through personal accounts. Hearing these voices are an important reminder that there are many who live among us who continue to experience discrimination and unequal treatment. They are a reminder that we need to do better – if one suffers in our communities, we all suffer.
We need to continue discussions on how to ensure that the protection of human rights and human dignity is not sacrificed while providing security. As a state legislator I am honored to have the opportunity to listen first-hand to the personal stories and experiences of community members. Post 9/11 experiences and lessons learned from Minnesota communities are powerful voices that can be used to direct more inclusive policies and laws.
We determine the environment we live in, and we decide if we want a state that is welcoming to all people, regardless of religion or ethnicity. The daily lives of new Minnesotans have been greatly affected by government and community responses to 9/11. I hope we not only listen to the stories of the affected but that we learn from them and go forward together with a greater appreciation of our possibilities for a future without fear or discrimination.
