RELEASE: Rep. Anna Wills appointed to Legislative Surrogacy Commission

Tuesday, June 28, 2016

SAINT PAUL- On Tuesday, June 28th, the Minnesota State Legislative Surrogacy Commission held its first meeting at the State Capitol. Rep. Anna Wills (R- Rosemount) was newly appointed to the Legislative Surrogacy Commission earlier this month. The bipartisan, bicameral commission will meet to discuss how the legislature should approach the growing questions surrounding surrogacy, specifically commercial surrogacy. Currently, there is nothing in Minnesota state statute that addresses the commercial surrogacy industry.

"I am honored to have been appointed to serve on the Legislative Surrogacy Commission," said Wills. "Addressing commercial surrogacy in our state is long overdue, and it is essential that we start discussing measures that define safe and ethical practices. I look forward to addressing these issues with fellow legislators and stakeholders."

The first meeting of the Legislative Surrogacy Commission consisted of a brief overview of the surrogacy issue in Minnesota over the past few decades. Rep. Peggy Scott (R-Andover) and Sen. Alice Johnson (D- Spring Lake Park) were elected co-chairs.

Meetings of the Legislative Surrogacy Commission are open, and the public is invited to attend. For upcoming meeting dates, information will be available at the Legislative Coordinating Commission's Surrogacy Commission web page: http://www.lcc.leg.mn/lcs/
