RELEASE: Rep. Jim Newberger Statement on REAL ID

Tuesday, May 17, 2016

Following the May 17th House floor session, Rep. Jim Newberger (R-Becker) issued the following statement on REAL ID.

"REAL ID has been an ongoing debate, and I am pleased to say that House Republicans proposed, and passed, a plan that will provide REAL IDs to people who want them to board domestic flights and enter federal facilities, while also providing those with data privacy concerns an option to opt-out of federal REAL ID requirements," said Rep. Newberger. "While the new REAL IDs will not require any additional information than what is currently needed to get a driver's license, I am also glad that a second option will be available for individuals wanting to opt-out of the federal standards."

"The motivation behind federal REAL ID standards is that they would make it less likely that terrorists would board flights or enter federal facilities using a fake ID card. This bill addresses the needs of all Minnesotans, while simultaneously improving safety at federal facilities and for air travel. I look forward to the debate with the Senate."
