RELEASE: Rep. Tim Sanders statement on Fantasy Sports Act passage

Monday, April 11, 2016

On Monday, April 11th, the House passed HF2540, a bill authored by Rep. Tim Sanders (R-Blaine) affirming the legality of fantasy sports. Currently, Minnesota law does not specifically state that fantasy sports are lawful. In addition, wording in existing gambling law leaves open the possibility that participants in fantasy sports might be held criminally liable. HF2540 makes clear that fantasy sports are legal in Minnesota.

“I’m happy that we could pass this bill to guarantee fantasy sports remain legal in Minnesota,” said Sanders. “We have over 1 million Minnesotans who play fantasy sports on a regular basis; it’s a cultural phenomenon. This bill will ensure that people can continue to participate in, and enjoy, fantasy sports. It’s important that we put this clarification into law, and I’m glad we could pass this measure with bipartisan support.”
