St. Paul - The University of Minnesota has named it's Minnesota's 'Farm Families of the Year,' and State Representative Tim Miller (R-Prinsburg) is congratulating this year's local recipients.

“These are people who are not only making a positive impact in agriculture but a positive impact in their local communities,” Miller said. “They deserve this recognition and I’m pleased they are receiving the award.”

JM Carlson Farms is this year's recipient from Swift County. Jim Carlson and his son Michael, along with their wives, raise cows, feeder cattle, hay, wheat, corn and soybeans. They also custom grind hay, straw, corn and bean stalks as well as custom chop hay and silage.

The Payne Partnership, consisting of Tom, Chad, and Jan Payne are the winners from Chippewa County. The family raises corn and soybeans on 2,500 acres. The Payne’s have 160 acres in CREP and use a combination of conservation and conventional tillage.

The Mike Sullivan family has received the honor from Renville County. They raise corn and soybeans and occasionally grow canning crops, including sweet corn and peas, and Mike has been working the land since 1968.

Kandiyohi County's recipient is Lilleberg Farms. Stan and Barb Lilleberg and their children specialize in crop production. Canning crops and dry edible beans, along with corn and soybeans make up the bulk of the operation.

Miller said the families will officially receive their award at Farmfest on August 4.
