Howe awarded for assisting community radio network

Thursday, July 7, 2016

ST. PAUL – Rep. Jeff Howe, R-Rockville, has received an award for his efforts in delivering funding for emergency messaging and educational programming via radio to underserved rural areas of Minnesota.

The award came from the Association of Minnesota Public Educational Radio Stations, a collection of 18 independent community radio stations throughout Minnesota, including KVSC in St. Cloud. Howe successfully authored legislation this biennium providing Ampers with $1.3 million in community service grants and equipment funding.

“These are true community stations that provide good services at the grass-roots level,” Howe said. “One thing we have learned is many people are under the impression these stations are affiliates of the much larger Minnesota Public Radio, but that is not the case. These are small, mom-and-pop operations that stay out of the politics and run on a shoestring budget. Minnesota is unique in supporting these community stations and I am pleased we are able to provide this funding.”
